Can I use a label printer?

A small percentage of our software users are able to use a label printer to print MSLs. These are normally customers who purchased a label printer some time ago. Please read the following list very carefully before purchasing a new label printer. Our software supports ONLY the following models of label printers:

1. Intermec 3400B (with firmware 2.0 or better), 203 DPI
2. Intermec 4420 (with firmware 1.8 or better), 203 DPI
3. Zebra Z4000 (203 DPI)
4. Zebra PT400 (203 DPI)
5. Zebra Z4M (203 DPI)

Note: The software ONLY supports the label printers listed above. We are unable to assist in the installation or configuration of any label printers not listed above.

Note: You don't need to have a label printer to print MSLs. Please see the next FAQ.

I don't have one of the label printers listed above. How do I print labels?

You can still print labels with your laser printer. A laser printer is typically used in the office to print a bulk of the documents. You may use label stock paper to create labels, or you may affix MSLs created on laser paper to the boxes. Please see the Laser Printer section for more details.

I happen to have one of the label printers listed above. How do I set it up?

First, you must ensure that no drivers are loaded for the label printer. Your label printer must be directly connected to your PC via the serial port. It is not designed to work with our software through an LPT port.

Now you are ready to configure the software.

1. Start AMS.
2. Select System — Setup menu option. You will be required to enter the AMS administrator password to access this function.
3. Select the “Peripherals” tab.
4. Click on “Label Printer Setup.”
5. From the drop down menu choose a port. The port choice depends on your system configuration. (Check with your system administrator for your configuration).
6. Choose “Yes” only if this will be your default MSL printer.
7. Click “OK.”
8. Select the "Save Setup" button. A prompt will appear “Setup parameters saved to disk” — Click “OK.”
9. Select “Re-protect Setup” to return to main screen.
