Symbol Model 7240 BCR
How do I load the software?
Note: Please read through all of the following instructions
and notes before attempting to load software.
- Start the AMS program on your computer. The MCL link program will
start running and minimize itself at the bottom of your screen. Click
on MCL link to maximize.
Note: If MCL link is not running, click on the BCR
icon on your computer screen. The BCR program will load and MCL link
will be minimized at the bottom of your screen. Click on MCL link to
maximize.
- Place the BCR in the cradle by sliding the handle all the way back
into the cradle. The BCR is in the proper position, when the indicator
light is lit on the top portion of the BCR screen. This light is yellow
when charging and green when fully charged.

- Turn the BCR on by pressing the power key. Hold the power key for a
few seconds and release to reboot.

Note: Wait until the words “Touch Point 1”
appear.
- The BCR will execute multiple DOS commands. You may ignore these
commands and the information displayed by them. When the booting is
done, the BCR will prompt you to calibrate the touch screen. This
begins when the screen reads “Touch Point 1” (Point 1 is
located in the lower left hand corner).
- After touching that point, the screen will read “Touch Point
2” (Point 2 is located in the lower right hand corner).
- Finally, after touching point 2, the screen will read “Touch
Point 3” (Point 3 is located in the upper right hand corner).
- After touching point 3, the licensing screen appears. Press the
OK button or wait until the initialization screen appears.
- Immediately after you have pressed OK, you need to
be prepared to press Cl. The system will play a short
tune. At this time, the screen will look something like this:

After you hear this tune, you have 5 seconds in which to press
Cl.
- If you see the AMS screen, you did not press Cl fast
enough and you need to go back to step 3.
- If the screen is titled System Menu, you are at the
right place.
- Select 5. Special, and press Enter.
Then from the Special Functions Menu, choose
2. Load Project.

- Finally from the Load Project Menu, choose
1. Via Cable. Make sure that the settings are correct,
the BCR is in the cradle and MCL-Link is running. The Baud
Rate should be strong>115200 and Host
Comm should be CRADLE. Press strong>Enter
and the BCR will begin receiving the AMS software.

- Check the MCL-Link window to make sure that all of the files have
been properly transferred to the BCR. Good transfers are marked with
large green check marks, bad ones with big red Xs. If required, repeat
the download.

- The software loading is complete when the licensing screen appears on
the BCR, followed by a screen prompting you to Login. At this point,
minimize MCL link on your computer screen.
How do I reboot the BCR?
- Turn the BCR on by pressing the power key. Hold the power key for a
few seconds and release to reboot.

Note: Wait until the words “Touch Point
1” appear.
- When the screen reads “Touch Point 1,” press the indicated
point located in the lower left hand corner. The BCR will beep.

- Next, the screen will read “Touch Point 2.” Press the
indicated point located in the lower right hand corner. The BCR will beep.
- Finally, the screen will read “Touch Point 3.” Press the
indicated point located in the upper right hand corner. The BCR will beep.
- After touching point 3, the licensing screen appears. Press "OK".
- The BCR will prompt you to login.
Why can’t I download data from my BCR?
- First, make sure you are following the correct downloading procedure.
- Scan data. You must have at least one record scanned before downloading.
- Place BCR in dock. Ensure that the BCR has made contact with the
dock and the indicator light is on.
- Select “download” from the BCR menu.
- Check to see if MCL link is running. This software program is
necessary to capture the downloaded data. If MCL link is not running,
click on the BCR icon to activate it.
- The cable connections may not be secure, or may be connected to the
wrong port. Check your cable connections to make sure that they are
properly connected.
- The BCR may not have good contact with the dock. Check to see if the
indicator light is lit on the BCR while seated in the dock.

- Clean the connectors on both the BCR and dock with a clean, dry cloth.
How do I increase or decrease the screen brightness?
To lighten or darken the screen contrast, use the second button from the
left on the top of the BCR touch screen. This white button is shaped like
an enclosed circle that is half dark and half white. Keep pressing this
button until the desired contrast is achieved. The screen may appear to
blank during this process until the proper contrast is restored. While
pressing this icon, the contrast will continue to darken until the
display blacks out. Continue pressing this icon to make the display
brighter and achieve the desired contrast.

How do I turn the backlight on or off?
To turn the backlight on, press the second button from the right on the
top of the BCR touch screen. This white button is shaped like an enclosed
light bulb. To turn the backlight off, press the button again or wait for
the backlight to go off automatically.

How do I access the alphabetic keyboard?
In some cases, the BCR will display the numeric keyboard as a
default. If you need to switch to alphabetical from another keyboard
(such as the numeric keyboard or the function keyboard), press the
Al key on your touchscreen.
How do I access the numeric keyboard?
In some cases, the BCR will display the alphabetic keyboard as a default.
If you need to switch to numeric from another keyboard (such as the
alphabetic keyboard or the function keyboard), press the Nu
key on your touchscreen.
Can I use this scanner to scan 2D barcodes?
Yes, the Symbol 7240 can be used to scan AMS generated 1348s, AMS
generated 1387s, AMS generated Packing Lists, and US Military IDs with 2D
barcodes.
Can this scanner work in RF mode?
Yes, the Symbol 7240 can work in RF mode as long as the necessary
hardware and software is available and properly configured.
How can I be sure my BCR is operating in RF mode?
In order for your BCR to scan in RF you must, at a minimum, have the
following components:
- AMS 2.0 or later.
- Symbol PDT 7240 set to RF mode.
- RF Access Point installed at your site.
- IP address of RF Access Point.*

* The IP address of the RF Access Point may be obtained from your IT/MIS
administrator.
How do I recharge the battery?
The battery can be recharged in three different ways:
- Using the Symbol dock/cradle:
- Insert the battery to be charged in the battery slot in the front
of the Symbol dock/cradle, by pushing the battery into the slot
until it clicks into place, or by turning the arrow on base of the
battery to the locked position. The indicator light will be yellow
when charging and green when the charge is complete.

- Using the Universal Battery Charger (UBC):
- Insert the battery to be charged in the battery slot in the
Symbol UBC, by either pushing the battery into slot until it clicks
into place, or by turning arrow on base of battery to locked
position.
- The indicator light will be yellow when charging and green when
the charge is complete.

- The battery may also be left in the BCR to charge:
- Leave the battery in the BCR and place the BCR in the Symbol
dock/cradle.
- Ensure that the BCR is seated correctly in the Symbol dock/cradle
and is making contact. You will know that the BCR is seated
correctly when the indicator light on the BCR is on. The indicator
light will be yellow when charging and green when the charge is
complete.

How do I change the battery?
- Remove the battery:
- Turn the BCR off.
- Either grasp rubber base on both sides and squeeze base and slide
back, or turn arrow located on base of battery to open (unlocked)
position.
- Remove battery.
- Insert the charged battery in the handle. The battery should slip in
easily and either click into place when locked, or you must turn the
arrow located on the base of battery to locked position.
Will I lose data if I change the battery?
You will not lose data if you replace the battery immediately when it is
low. The BCR comes with 2 batteries. You should always have a spare battery
charged and ready for use. Do not change the battery until after you have
downloaded data from your current session. If the BCR has powered down due
to a low battery, immediately download data and replace the battery before
scanning more data.
How do I set the date and time on the BCR?
- From the main menu, select Config.
- Select Date & Time.
- Enter the Year and press Enter.
- Next, enter the Month and press Enter.
- Enter the Day and press Enter.
- Enter the Hour and press Enter.
- Enter the Minute and press Enter.
- Enter the Second and press Enter.
The BCR will go back to the Configuration menu at this time.
- Press Done to return to the main menu.
Note: The BCR may already be preset to the current date and
time. If the information displayed in a field is correct, press
Enter to continue to the next field.
