How do I map machines to share data?
In order to use our software in a "server/workstation" environment, you will need to go through the
five step process outlined below. You will need to install our software on each of the machines. All machines
used must be connected to the same network and domain. Your IT support staff should be able to assist in
this process.
Note: All images were taken using a Windows 2000
machine. Windows NT and Windows XP have the same functionality, but will look
slightly different.
- First, you must choose a machine to act as a server and share the software directory.
- On the server, open Windows Explorer. Find the directory
you want to share (typically that's "C:\CATT\MI") and right click on it.
- Choose Sharing... from the menu.
- Select Share this folder.
- The share name defaults to the directory name. Make a note of the share name, as you
will use this as the foldername in step #4.
- For the User Limit, select Maximum Allowed.
- Next, select the Permissions button.
- Highlight Everyone and use the checkboxes to select Allow for
Full Control, Change, and Read.
Note: These options vary for Windows XP. Select Share this folder,
Allow network users to change my files, and Apply.
- Next, you need to make a note of the server's Computer Name. You can usually do this
by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. Find the
Computer Name and write it down. You will use this as the server's machine name
in step #4.
- Now you need to make changes to your software setup on the server.
- Start MSL/IRRD and select Setup.
- Select Installation Type.
- Select Server and Exit.
- Save your settings before exiting Setup.
- Now you're ready to begin working on the workstation. You will repeat these steps for each workstation
that you wish to set up. We'll start with mapping the workstation.
- Using Windows Explorer, choose Tools and Map Network Drive.
You'll see the following screen:

- Just like the example on the bottom of this screen, you will type \\servername\foldername. Be sure to use the
server's machine name from step #2 and the folder name that you shared from step #1. Check the
Reconnect at logon box. Make a note of the drive letter that Windows assigns and select
Finish.
Note: This drive letter may vary for each workstation you map. Windows will use the next
letter that is available.
- Finally, you need to change your software setup on the workstation.
- Start MSL/IRRD and select Setup.
- Select Installation Type.
- Select Workstation. Leave the Machine Name blank. Enter the drive letter
that Windows assigned in step #3 for Drive. For the Directory Name, just enter \, as shown on the
screen below.

- Select Exit.
- Save your settings before exiting Setup.
